The orthodontic-periodontal interface: hazards, precautions and guidelines to prevent irreversible damage

Tuesday 3rd April 2012

The perio-ortho interrelationship is becoming increasingly popular as patients and clinicians alike realise the need and benefits of multidisciplinary treatment when required. It is however important that the disciplines work together in a synergistic way and understand how they benefit each other and how they can avoid negatively affecting or disturbing each other's outcome.

Learning Objectives

  • To expose dentists to the effect of orthodontic treatment on the severity of periodontitis, particularly Aggressive Periodontitis and present guidelines of a follow-up protocol to minimise or prevent periodontal deterioration.
  • To expose dentists to the effect of orthodontic treatment on gingival recession onset/ progression.
  • Proposed solutions and sequence of therapy when such problems are diagnosed.
